Aussies drink more than Kiwis or Yanks, but less than Brits and not nearly as much as the Irish, a new report says. Researchers say we're drinking more wine, but losing our taste for beer. Statistically, every Australian quaffs an average of 7.8 litres of pure alcohol a year. The world's biggest drinkers are the Irish, downing 12.3 litres of pure alcohol a year, o­n average. The average Aussie drinks 95 litres of beer a year, ranking us ninth among OECD countries. Czechs are the world's biggest beer drinkers, guzzling 160 litres each a year. But the world's biggest wine drinkers live in Luxembourg, quaffing 60.8 litres a year. Aussies manage o­nly a third as much, or 19.7 litres, placing us 18th from the top. And Australia ranks o­nly 34th o­n the list of the world's biggest drinkers of spirits. Latvia, Russia and Romania top the list. "The overall level of alcohol consumption in Australia is returning to levels last seen in the 1960s," researcher Cid Mateo said. "While the per capita consumption of wine quadrupled over the last 40 years, beer consumption was slightly lower now than in 1961-62." Australians also had the third lowest daily smoking rates of all OECD countries.
